Fireflies of Tatsuno
On early summer nights, numerous lights dance softly along the riverbanks. This is the scenery of Tatsuno Town, renowned as 'Japan's number one firefly village.' Matsuo Gorge in Tatsuno Town has been known since the Meiji era as one of the leading spots for Genji fireflies in Eastern Japan. Although they once nearly disappeared due to deteriorating water quality, the swarms have been revived through the steady conservation efforts of local residents; in abundant years, over ten thousand fireflies dance wildly in a single night. During the 'Shinshu Tatsuno Firefly Festival' in June, many people visit from all over the country seeking this magical sight. Confections featuring firefly motifs are also popular as souvenirs from Tatsuno. Why not take home a sweet memory of that gentle light?
