Chestnut Okowa (Sticky Rice)

A sweet aroma of chestnuts rises gently from the fluffy cooked glutinous rice. It is a quintessential autumn delicacy of Obuse. Originally, this dish was prepared at home for special occasions such as celebratory gifts (uchiiwai), but eventually, local chestnut confectionery shops began producing it. Today, it has become such a famous specialty that many people visit Obuse specifically to enjoy chestnut okowa. The fragrant, sweet chestnuts and the glutinous rice infused with their flavor are offered by long-established shops like Chikufudo, Sakurai Kanseido, and Obusedo, each providing their own unique taste. Breaking apart the tender chestnuts with your chopsticks and eating them along with the chewy rice creates a perfect bite. Paired with handmade soba noodles or a hearty miso soup, it becomes a meal that allows you to savor the full bounty of Shinshu.
