Gohei Mochi
The fragrant aroma of miso toasted over charcoal. This Shinshu-style grilled mochi, known as "Gohei Mochi," has long attracted travelers passing through the post towns of the Nakasendo. It is a traditional local dish passed down in Kiso and Southern Shinshu, made by flattening non-glutinous rice, shaping it on a skewer, and grilling it after coating it with walnut or sesame miso. It is said that the name originates from its resemblance to the "Gohei" (ritual wand) used in Shinto ceremonies, or perhaps from a person named Gohei who created it; records suggest it already existed by the mid-Edo period. An interesting aspect of the food culture is how it divides into "Oyaki" in the north and "Gohei Mochi" in the south, with the Shiojiri area serving as the boundary. Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, this simple and heartwarming specialty features a sweet and savory miso aroma that stimulates the appetite.
