Osari Terraced Rice Fields Rice
On the slopes overlooking Zenkoji Plain, countless small rice paddies cascade in steps. This is rice grown in the terraced fields of Osari, a village famous for its beautiful moonlit nights. The Osari terraced rice fields are said to have been opened during the Warring States period, and expanded into their current form with the construction of irrigation ponds during the Edo period. This land has long been celebrated in poetry as a famous spot for moon viewing, renowned for 'Tamo no Tsuki,' where the moon is reflected in each individual paddy. In 1999, it became the first terraced rice field in the country to be designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty; in 2010, it was selected as an Important Cultural Landscape, and in 2020, it was named a Japan Heritage site. The elevation changes in these terraced fields create significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, imbuing the rice with a deep umami flavor. It is a special bowl of rice that people and the moon have protected and passed down through the long ages.
