Mocha Soft

With a single bite, a gentle sweetness and a hint of pleasant bitterness float through the air. Wandering along Ginza Street in Kyukaruizawa with a soft-serve ice cream infused with the aroma of coffee—it is a quintessential Karuizawa moment. The Mocha Soft was created by Mikado Coffee, a coffee shop founded in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, in 1948, which opened its Karuizawa location in 1952. The founder, Keisuke Kanzaka, spent over a year developing this treat because he wanted "even children who cannot drink coffee to enjoy its flavor." It was eventually released at the Old Road shop in 1969. It is said that the recipe was perfected through countless tastings, including those by his daughter, who was an elementary school student at the time. This is a treat that established the very style of strolling through Karuizawa with a soft-serve ice cream in hand. A highland specialty loved across generations.
