Karuizawa Jam

The moment you open the jar, the sweet aroma of fruit wafts out. Thickly simmered strawberries and blueberries turn your highland morning toast into a special treat. Karuizawa is said to be the birthplace of jam in Japan. It is told that during the Meiji era, local people learned how to make jam from foreign missionaries and Russians who visited for summer retreats. 'Nakayama Jam,' founded in 1905, has its roots in the first generation learning the method from a missionary. After the war, brands like Sawayaya and Jam Kobayashi were established, becoming favorites among villa owners. The cool highland climate is also ideal for preserving fruit, allowing jam-making to take deep root. Strawberry, apricot, rhubarb—each jar captures the blessings of the highlands. The history of the summer resort Karuizawa is dissolved right here.
