Yahiko Onsen Manju
This is a specialty of the temple town that has been cherished as a souvenir for visiting Yahiko Shrine. There are two types of this onsen manju, which is a tradition of Yahiko Onsen: smooth red bean paste wrapped in dark sugar dough, and chunky red bean paste in wheat manju dough. Made with carefully selected ingredients using traditional old-fashioned methods, it is an award-winning delicacy that has won gold at the Niigata Prefecture Exhibition. Along Gaiun-zaka Street, which leads from Yahiko Shrine to Yahiko Park, steam rises from the shops steaming the manju, warmly welcoming visitors. The elegant sweetness of the bean paste pairs perfectly with the freshly steamed, fluffy dough. It is a simple, rustic taste that makes you want to take a bite on your way home from worship. It has been loved for a long time as a staple Yahiko souvenir.
