The Streetscapes of Sawara
Along the Ono River, the scenery of the Edo period remains vibrantly alive—Katori City's Sawara is a water town known as the 'Little Edo of Hokuso.' The merchant streetscapes, which flourished through river transport, were the first in the Kanto region to be designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. It was here that Tadasu Ino, who ran a sake brewery as an adopted son, later completed Japan's first surveyed map. His former residence still stands by the Ono River, serving as a pier for river cruises. One can almost sense the former bustle of the area, evoked by the sentiment: 'If you want to see Edo, come to Sawara.' Strolling leisurely along the riverside with traditional Japanese sweets or tsukudani in hand, you will find a town where the passage of time slows down.
