Whale Cuisine

Whale meat cut into palm-sized pieces is marinated in a special sauce and slowly dried in the sun—the 'whale tare' (marinated whale) of Wadaura, Minamiboso, is a flavor unique to this town, with a rich umami that seeps out the more you chew. Wadaura remains one of the few whaling towns in the country that still lands Bryde's whales migrating along the coast in summer. It has been carving out its history of whaling since ancient times. From Tatsuta-age (deep-fried), steaks, and bacon to precious sashimi, a diverse variety of whale dishes color the dining table and have been cherished as a feast for special occasions. When grilled and chewed, the savory flavor spreads gently through the mouth. It is a blessing from the Boso sea that can only be tasted because of this whaling base.
