Katsuura Morning Market

Energetic voices echo through the streets in the early morning—the Katsuura Morning Market is one of the 'Three Great Morning Markets of Japan,' alongside Wajima in Ishikawa and Takayama in Gifu. Its history spans over 430 years. It is said to have begun around the year 1591 (Tensho 19), when the lord of Katsuura Castle established it as a place for farmers and fishermen to exchange crops and seafood. Even today, it is held every day except Wednesdays, with the tradition of moving the market location to different streets during the first and second halves of the month. With the bountiful Katsuura Port nearby, fresh seafood, farm-direct vegetables, and handmade side dishes are packed closely together. Strolling through the market with something freshly made in hand—this is the place where your travel morning becomes most enjoyable.
