Tateyama Loquat

When the skin is gently peeled away, a glossy orange flesh is revealed. With a single bite, an elegant sweetness and soft juice melt onto your palate—Boshu loquat is a flavor delivered only by the Boso Peninsula in early summer. It is said that loquat cultivation in the Boso Peninsula began in 1751 (the first year of the Horeki era), and by the mid-Edo period, it was already being shipped to the markets of Edo. The tradition has been passed down through Tomiura, Tateyama, and the entire Minamiboso area, and since 1909 (Meiji 42), it has been known as 'Kenjo Biwa' (loquats presented to the Imperial Family). Chiba is one of Japan's leading production areas, second only to Nagasaki. The season lasts for only a brief moment in early summer. It is a luxurious fruit, often referred to as the 'Lady of Fruits.'
