Funabashi Pears

With a single bite, juice overflows along with a crisp texture. The refreshing sweetness soothes your throat in the summer heat—Funabashi pears are a masterpiece boasted by one of Japan's premier pear-growing areas. Pear cultivation in Chiba is said to date back to the Edo period, and in Funabashi, cultivation spread throughout the city after a fruit tree research cooperative was established in the 1950s. The Kanto loam soil, derived from volcanic ash and providing excellent drainage, is ideal for pear growing, and even today, about 100 pear farms line the city. In 2014, 'Funabashi no Nashi' (Funabashi Pears) was registered as a regional collective trademark. Biting into them while chilled, experiencing that succulent freshness. This is the true joy of summer.
