Butter Mochi
With a single bite, the chewy texture is followed by a gentle burst of rich butter flavor. It remains soft even after time has passed, leaving a lingering, gentle sweetness—this is Butter Mochi, a local confection born in Kitaakita. It is made by mixing kneaded glutinous rice with butter, egg yolk, flour, and sugar. Legend has it that it originated as a preserved food for the Matagi (traditional hunters) of Ani and Morikoshi. Because the addition of butter prevents it from hardening even in the cold mountains and provides lasting satiety, it is said they always carried it when entering the mountains. This is a flavor that has been passed down from mother to child in various households for generations. After being featured on television, it gained nationwide popularity all at once. It is a simple, warm snack born from the snowy region.
