Sakurajima-yama Karukan

Sakurajima, the symbol of Kagoshima, has been transformed into a sweet. The 'Sakurajima-yama Karukan' is visually delightful, shaped like the majestic mountain. Karukan (lightly steamed cake) is a traditional Japanese confection representing Kagoshima, made by steaming jinenjo (mountain yam) and rice flour. It is said to have been devised by a confectioner invited from Edo to the Satsuma clan lord, Shimazu Nariakira, during the Edo period. Because mountain yams grew abundantly on the Shirasu plateau and sugar was available from Amami and Ryukyu, it is said to have taken deep root in this region. Its charm lies in its white, fluffy, and gentle mouthfeel. An exquisite local confection that is fun to look at and comforting to eat. Please enjoy its soft, elegant sweetness as if you were gazing out at Sakurajima.
