Sanzando Kashipo Sazae Monaka
The plump shape of a seashell is truly adorable. The 'Sazae Monaka' made by Sanzando Kashipo in Akune City, Kagoshima Prefecture, is a unique treat that you can't help but reach for. Akune City is a port town facing the East China Sea. This specialty of the shop was born from the motif of the turban shell (sazae), a bounty of that sea. Because the top and bottom halves of the monaka shell are different shapes, each one is still finished by hand by skilled artisans. With its visual impact and rustic deliciousness, it is a long-beloved confection that has been cherished locally for over half a century.
