Zabieru

There is a story behind 'Zabieru'—a famous confection that once disappeared from the city but was brought back to life by the wishes of the people. Its name comes from Francis Xavier, the missionary who visited Bungo during the Warring States period. It is a Nanban-style sweet released by Chokyudo in 1962, featuring two types of fillings—elegant white bean paste and rum raisin paste—wrapped in moist, butter-flavored dough. However, in 2000, due to the manufacturer's business difficulties, Zabieru disappeared. In response to local calls of 'We want that taste again,' former employees established a new company the following year and resumed production. It remains a classic, beloved souvenir of Oita.
