Kiso Narai-juku Kimura Mitarashi Dango

These are traditional mitarashi dango made by Kimura of Narai-juku on the Nakasendo highway. Narai-juku is one of Japan's longest post towns, said to have been the most bustling area along the Kiso Road. Old streetscapes still remain along the highway connecting Edo and Kyoto. Kimura is a shop located in a townhouse believed to be 300 years old, where they have handcrafted Gohei-mochi and dango. In this post town, chewy dumplings coated in a sweet and savory soy sauce glaze have long satisfied the hunger of travelers. The fragrant aroma of the sauce will surely make you stop in your tracks. Eating them while strolling through the old streets allows you to experience the nostalgia of ancient travels. It is the perfect companion for walking the Kiso Road.
