Iijima Shoten Misuzu Ame
Beautiful like gemstones, these sweets are 'Misuzu Ame,' continuously crafted by Iijima Shoten in Ueda City since the Meiji era. This semi-soft candy is made by setting the juice of carefully selected domestic fruits—such as apricot, plum, and grape—with agar and starch syrup. The roots of Iijima Shoten lie in 'Aburaya,' a grain merchant located along the Kitaguni Kaido highway. It is said that the first generation, Shinzaburo Iijima, who took over the family business at age sixteen, created this new type of dried candy in the late Meiji period by combining Shinshu's specialty fruits with agar and starch syrup. The charm lies in the natural sweetness of the fruit itself and its smooth texture. The joy of choosing from a variety of colorful pieces is unique to Misuzu Ame. Please enjoy this classic Ueda souvenir.
