Azumido Kobayashi Kuri Manju
"Kuri Manju" is made with chestnut paste by Azusado Kobayashi of Matsumoto City. It is said that the name "Kuri" (meaning chestnut) was chosen as a play on words, because Azunno, where the main store of Azusado Kobayashi is located, was once a region consisting of nine villages. Chestnuts have been beloved by people since ancient times, and during the Edo period, a wordplay saying "Thirteen Ri is four Ri tastier than Kuri (nine Ri)" became popular. This manju consists of homemade bean paste containing chopped candied chestnuts, wrapped in a fluffy dough. This is a simple, rustic Japanese sweet characteristic of Matsumoto, where the aroma and gentle sweetness of chestnut spread softly. It is an item you'll want to savor slowly accompanied by warm tea.
