Ontake Monaka
A monaka shaped exactly like Mount Ontake, the second highest independent peak in Japan after Mount Fuji. The Kiso-based confectionary 'Taguchi' is a long-established shop located near JR Kiso-Fukushima Station. The Ontake Monaka is their flagship product and a registered trademark, featuring the words 'Kiso Mt. Ontake' on its shell. The ingredients are very simple: adzuki beans, sugar, chestnuts, starch syrup, and glutinous rice. A characteristic feature is that as time passes, the shell and bean paste blend together to become soft like mochi. Its elegant sweetness evokes memories of traveling through the Kiso road, a route long associated with the worship of Mt. Ontake.
