Shinshu Mebukido: Shinshu White Birch Avenue
With white bark and black stripes—this is a lovely confection shaped like the white birch trees that grace the highlands of Shinshu. Based in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, Shinshu Mebukido is a confectionery shop that produces many souvenirs characteristic of the Shinshu region. 'Shinshu White Birch Avenue' consists of moist baumkuchen cut into small pieces and coated in white and milk chocolate, finished to look exactly like a white birch tree. It has been a beloved treat during various occasions in Shinpi, such as the Zenko-ji temple's special openings. The relatively sweet flavor pairs well with strong coffee or tea. It is a classic Shinshu souvenir that brings to mind the refreshing scenery of the highlands.
