Shiokawa Kashipo: Kakeyu Manju
Shiokawa Kashipo has been continuing since the fifth year of the Taisho era (1916) in Kakeyu Onsen, Ueda. The "Kakeyu Manju" is an indispensable specialty of this hot spring town. This onsen manju features a fragrant dough made with brown sugar, generously filled with smooth red bean paste made from Hokkaido adzuki beans. Because no preservatives are used, the shelf life is short, but this allows you to enjoy the simple taste of freshly made treats. When visiting Kakeyu Onsen, eating while strolling after a bath is the local way. The simple sweetness of the soft brown sugar dough and smooth bean paste will soothe your heart. There is also a buckwheat flour version called "Soba Manju," making it fun to compare the two. It is a deeply delicious manju to enjoy alongside the hot spring atmosphere.
