Toranomon Okanoeisen Chestnut Manju

When you break open the moderately baked skin, a whole chestnut rests inside smooth white bean paste. The gentle sweetness and the fluffy texture of the chestnut overlap, creating an elegant aftertaste in every bite. Toranomon Okanoeisen is a long-established Japanese confectionery shop founded in the first year of the Taisho era (1912). Its roots trace back to Okanoe Eisen in Komagata, Asakusa, which was founded at the end of the Edo period, and this lineage was passed down to this location through a branch establishment. This Chestnut Manju is their second most popular item after their Mame Daifuku. The homemade white bean paste preserves a flavor passed down through generations since the founder. It is a meticulous creation where the cooking method of the adzuki beans and the sugar ratio are adjusted for each product. It is a Tokyo confection that carries the prestige of Edo, making you want to brew some tea and savor it slowly.
