Kasho Manju
Yellow, red, and brown. The sight of these three-colored manju lined up brightens the heart just by looking at them. When you break open the soft yam skin, smooth bean paste is revealed, spreading a gentle sweetness with every bite. Kasho Manju is an auspicious sweet associated with June 16th, 'Wagashi Day.' Its origins lie in the ancient Heian period tradition of 'Kasho,' where sweets were eaten to ward off disasters and invite good fortune. Each features an auspicious brand mark: yellow is yamaimo (yam), red is Shin-manju, and brown is Rikyu-manju. Red beans have long been believed to possess the power to dispel evil spirits. This is a historic Tokyo wagashi, enjoyed while praying for protection from misfortune and the arrival of good luck. It allows you to feel the changing of the seasons.
