Tomegura Otoboke Mame (Playful Beans)
After a light, crunchy texture, the oceanic aroma of green seaweed and shrimp gently wafts through. These savory bean snacks are perfect as an accompaniment to tea or a small evening drink. Tomegura is a long-established shop founded in 1865 in what is now Azabu-Juban. The shop name originates from the nickname of the founder, "Genbei of the Bean Shop," who used to walk through the downtown Edo area carrying roasted beans on a shoulder pole. Their most popular product, Otoboke Mame, is a specialty that combines three oceanic flavors: green seaweed, shredded seaweed, and shrimp. Despite the silly name, the aromatic profile is truly authentic. A handful, then another... before you know it, you see the bottom of the bag—it possesses a simple addictiveness. It is a relaxed, quintessential Edo souvenir from Azabu-Juban.
