Funawa Ningyo-yaki (Doll-shaped Cakes)

When you break open the fluffy dough, a gentle sweet potato paste reveals itself. This Ningyo-yaki is crafted by Funawa, a long-established shop in Asakusa. Funawa is a Japanese confectionery shop founded in Asakusa in 1902. While famous for their Imo-yokan and Anko-dama, these Ningyo-yaki have also been beloved as an Asakusa souvenir. Shaped like the Treasure Ship of the Seven Lucky Gods, it is considered auspicious, featuring a sophisticated harmony between the sponge-like dough and smooth sweet potato paste. It is a treat full of the traditional downtown charm characteristic of their founding place, Asakusa. The techniques cultivated through making Imo-yokan are brought to life here as well. Perfect with tea or as a small gift. One bite will make you feel as if you are strolling around the Kaminarimon area of Asakusa.
