Kozasa Monaka

A crispy, fragrant shell filled with plenty of bean paste. Though this monaka is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, there is an amazing story behind it. Located in Kichijoji Diya-gai, "Kozasa" is a shop measuring just one tsubo (about 3.3 square meters). Founded in 1951, it offers only two products: yokan (sweet bean jelly) and monaka. For over forty years, crowds have gathered every morning, seeking the legendary yokan that has become known as a 'phantom' delicacy. The shape of the monaka is modeled after Reishi, a mushroom said to last a thousand years in China, embodying a wish for long-lasting love. The bean paste, which has won the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Honorary Award, possesses an elegant sweetness that pairs perfectly with the crispy texture of the shell. This monaka, which can be obtained without waiting in line, serves as an entry point to the flavors of a renowned establishment. With just one bite, the pride of the artisan is conveyed.
