Shinshodo Seppuku Monaka
Plenty of bean paste peeks out from the crispy monaka shell. The moderately sweet fine bean paste and chewy gyuhi melt gently in your mouth. Shinshodo is a Japanese confectionery shop founded in Shinbashi in 1912. The shop's location is the former site of the Tamura residence, where Asano Takumi-no-kami, famous for Chushingura, committed seppuku. This 'Seppuku Monaka' was named in honor of that history. It is said that the bold name initially faced fierce opposition, but the third-generation owner, who loved Chushingura, insisted on it for two and a half years. Today, it is a representative confection of Shinbashi, with thousands sold every day. It is a unique treat that makes you want to savor the story along with the taste.
