Tokiwado Ningyo-yaki Mikoshi (Chunky Bean Paste)
Smooth bean paste tucked inside a fluffy baked castella dough. With one bite, a gentle sweetness infused with the aroma of egg spreads slowly through your palate. Its adorable size, fitting perfectly in the palm of your hand, is also part of its charm. Ningyo-yaki is a confection born from the meeting of Castella, introduced from the West, and traditional Japanese bean paste. Tokiwado, the maker of this treat, is a long-established Asakusa shop dating back to the late Edo period. It has been long enjoyed as an Edo specialty alongside Kaminari-okoshi. The auspicious shapes characteristic of Asakusa, such as portable shrines (mikoshi) and pigeons, make looking at them a joy in itself. In addition to smooth bean paste, you can also enjoy chunky bean paste and custard varieties. It is a warm souvenir that feels like it wraps up the very atmosphere of Asakusa.
