Uji Tea

When speaking of Japanese tea, Uji tea is an essential name. Boasting a history of over 800 years, it can truly be called the birthplace of Japanese tea. Its origins date back to the Kamakura period. It is said that Eisai brought tea seeds and the custom of tea drinking from Song China, and the monk Myoe, who received them, spread tea cultivation to Takayama-ji in Toganoo and then to Uji. The flow of the Kizu River, the hilly terrain, and the skills of the artisans have produced the pinnacle of fine teas: Matcha, Gyokuro, and Sencha. The mellow umami of tea leaves grown under shade and the rising rich aroma—a single cup of Uji tea quietly dissolves the aesthetic sensibilities of Kyoto, refined over many long years.
