When you crack open the jet-black shell, a steaming, pure white boiled egg is revealed. Taking a bite, the richness of the yolk feels slightly more intense than usual—this is Hakone Owakudani's famous 'Black Egg.' This black shell is a natural trick played by the volcanic geothermal heat. When slowly boiled in hot spring pools at approximately 80 degrees Celsius, the minerals from the spring adhere to the eggshell, dyeing it a magnificent black. Finished by being steamed with 100-degree steam, it is a delicacy you can only taste here. There is even an auspicious legend that eating one will extend your life by seven years.
