Hinomoto Kahei-mochi

A soft gyuhi mochi named after Kahei Takadaya, a great figure born on Awaji Island. It is crafted by Sumiyoshido Honpo, located in Goshiki, Sumoto City, the hometown of Kahei. This long-established shop, founded in 1887, devised this Kahei-mochi around 1965. Drawing inspiration from Kahei, who was active in maritime shipping during the late Edo period and handled negotiations with Russia, the sweet features bean paste made with Hokkaido adzuki beans, gently wrapped in soft gyuhi. The soft gyuhi, chewy texture, and elegant sweetness of the chunky bean paste pair perfectly. This simple, bite-sized confection subtly embodies the history of Awaji Island and respect for the local historical figure.
