Tomaya Gishi Yokan
A yokan (sweet bean jelly) named after the loyal retainers, born in Ako, a place closely associated with the Chushingura. Ako is known as the setting for the story of the 'Ako Gishi'—the 47 Ronin—who avenged their lord. Produced by Tomaya, a long-established shop located in front of the main gate of Ako Castle, this Gishi Yokan is a signature confection of Ako that reflects the story of the forty-seven retainers. It offers a rich variety of flavors, including traditional練り (nerikiri), matcha, brown sugar, cherry blossom, and a salty flavor utilizing Akō's specialty salt. Its small, easy-to-eat size is also a delight. The box is adorned with illustrations of the retainers, making it visually enjoyable and delicious to eat. It is a yokan you can enjoy while reflecting on history, accompanied by the flavor of salt nurtured by the sea of Ako.
