Freundliebe Stollen

A traditional German Christmas pastry, 'Stollen,' crafted by Freundliebe, a long-established Kobe bakery founded in 1924 (Taisho 13). The founder, Heinrich Freundliebe, was German. After settling in Japan following World War I, he established authentic German bread and this stollen within the lifestyle of Kobe. Today, the bakery is also known for using the former Union Church building as its shop and cafe. This item features a dough rich in butter, kneaded with plenty of dried fruits and nuts, and coated in powdered sugar. In the German style, the flavors meld more deeply as the days pass, making it best enjoyed by slicing thinly and savoring bit by bit. It is a Kobe specialty that heralds the arrival of winter.
